Invitation to the 2nd AI Strategy Seminar
“Current Legislative Debates on AI: Promotion and Regulation”

The rapid innovations in artificial intelligence (AI) are creating new opportunities and challenges across diverse fields. AI-driven businesses, led by the private sector, hold immense potential to boost productivity in industries such as healthcare, finance, manufacturing, and logistics. These advancements are expected to significantly strengthen national competitiveness and drive economic growth.

At the same time, the rapid pace of AI development raises new ethical and legal challenges, including issues of ethics, privacy, copyright, and liability. Excessive regulation could stifle innovation, making it essential to strike the right balance between promotion and regulation. Governments, industry, and academia must work together to foster AI innovation while upholding social responsibility and ethical standards.

The first seminar in this series explored strategies for private investment and government cooperation to drive AI innovation. The second seminar, titled “Current Legislative Debates on AI: Promotion and Regulation,” will examine the 13 AI-related bills proposed during the 21st National Assembly and the reasons they expired at the end of its term, drawing implications for the 22nd Assembly’s approach to AI legislation. It will provide a platform for government, industry, and academia to discuss the future direction of AI lawmaking.

The Institute for Future Strategy at Seoul National University has been actively working to build the ethical, institutional, and legal foundations for AI. This seminar, co-hosted with the Seoul National University AI Institute on July 11, 2024, will convene leading experts from universities, government, and industry for an in-depth discussion on the current state and direction of AI legislation.

We look forward to your participation in this important seminar as we gather insights to shape Korea’s national AI strategy.
