“Strategies for Engaging the Global South: South Korea as a Global Connector”

This issue brief provides in-depth expertise and insights on the strategic value of the Global South and ways to engage with it. The Global West and Global East, which together constitute the Global North, are engaged in fierce competition across various domains—including economic cooperation, military security, supply chains, exports, and technological supremacy—to secure partnerships with the Global South, which has emerged as an international swing bloc.

As South Korea aspires to become a “global pivotal state,” it is now time to establish a comprehensive and inclusive strategy toward the Global South to strengthen its strategic position within the changing world order. Accordingly, this issue brief explores ways for South Korea to enhance its strategic positioning in the international community as a global connector through cooperative and inclusive strategies with Global South countries, and presents concrete strategic directions for Korea to play a pivotal role in global governance in the emerging post-unipolar era.
