Institute for Future Strategy Issue Brief, December 2024, Vol. 14
“Population Decline and the Future of Manufacturing”
This issue brief presents in-depth expertise and insights on the impact of youth population decline on manufacturing and strategies for future response. Korea is experiencing a sharp decrease in its youth population due to persistently low birth rates, and this demographic shift poses a significant threat to the competitiveness of key national industries such as manufacturing.
In particular, given the heavy reliance of general manufacturing on low-grade, low-skilled foreign labor and middle-aged workers, there is a pressing need for the creation of innovative and scarce technologies in manufacturing and research and development (R&D).
Accordingly, this issue brief proposes the active attraction and cultivation of young talent from both domestic and international sources, and sets out policy directions for manufacturing and R&D innovation to lead the global value chain.
