“The Complex Crisis in the Taiwan Strait and Its Spillover Effects on the Korean Peninsula”

This issue brief provides an in-depth analysis of the military and diplomatic developments surrounding the Taiwan Strait crisis and its implications for the Korean Peninsula. The Taiwan Strait has become a focal point of international tension, where China’s “anaconda strategy” clashes with Taiwan’s “porcupine strategy,” and where repeated strategic confrontations between the United States and China heighten military tensions.

In this context, the Taiwan Strait crisis is evolving beyond a bilateral conflict between China and Taiwan into a complex crisis with significant consequences for the United States, its allies, and neighbouring countries. China is expanding its influence not only over Taiwan but also across the Western Pacific through grey-zone tactics and hybrid strategies, raising the likelihood of serious security and economic impacts on the Korean Peninsula and South Korea.

The brief analyses the potential implications of the Taiwan Strait crisis for Korea and proposes response strategies such as strengthening maritime jurisdiction, expanding cooperation with allies, and establishing proactive readiness postures.
