“Risk Assessment and Preparedness for an Avian Influenza Pandemic”
This issue brief provides an in-depth assessment of the spread of avian influenza viruses and the potential for a pandemic, along with strategies for preparedness. While influenza viruses naturally use birds as hosts, outbreaks among poultry and wild birds have led to increasing reports of infections in various mammals, including dogs, cats, cattle, horses, and pigs.
Although avian influenza viruses have not yet been transmitted between humans, the possibility of enhanced transmissibility through genetic mutations remains. In response, this brief proposes strategic measures to reduce the risk of human transmission, prevent the potential emergence of a pandemic, and strengthen response capacity.
